RESEARCH PROPOSALS

Writing a proposal is a critical part of the research process.   Care must be taken when developing the proposal.  The importance of the research proposal is discussed below.

Purpose of the Research Proposal

It satisfies three important goals:

  1. Organizing your ideas

Writing is the best way to clarify your thoughts and helps you organize your ideas into a coherent statement of your research intent.

  1. Convincing your Readers

It serves to convince your readers that your planned project is feasible within a given time frame and costs.

  1. Guiding and Evaluation

It is a document that will guide the conduct of the study at each stage and will also be used as a benchmark to determine whether the research objectives have been met

Contracting with your “Client”

Whether your client is an academic supervisor or a commercial organization and research proposal will be needed to ensure commitment by each through some sort of a contract.  Acceptance of the proposal means it is satisfactory, but does not mean or guarantee successful implementation.  But it sure means that you have made the right step towards the end of your journey.  It is up to you to ensure that you are not detained.

Content of the research Proposal

This varies a lot depending on factors such as whether the study is academic or contractual, the approach to the study, etc.  One suggestion is a framework for writing a business research proposal.  The salient points to note are that it must have a:-

  • Title
  • Background/Introduction to the study
  • Research Problem
  • Research Questions/Hypotheses and Objectives
  • Literature review/ conceptual framework
  • Methodology [Design, sampling, data collection, etc.]
  • Analytical methods
  • References
  • Timescale
  • Budget and Resources

Evaluating Research proposals

Criteria used vary a lot from organization to organization.  However, evaluators would like to:

  1. ascertain the extent to which the components of the proposal fit together
  2. be assured to the viability of the proposal.  Can it be carried out satisfactorily within the proposed time frame and costs?
  3. And that is does not contain pre-conceived ideas that have no relevance to the research questions.

Proposed Format for Writing Academic Research Proposals

Title page and Table of Contents

The title page should contain:-

  1. Name of the institution the candidate has registered at/ or study is sponsored by
  2. Name of the supervisors
  3. Department candidate has registered
  4. Proposed degree (e.g. MBA)
  5. Title of the study (or proposed title)
  6. Table of contents, List of figures, List of tables

1.0       INTRODUCTION

The introductory chapter should contain the following:

1.1       Background

1.2       Statement of the Problem

In stating the problem, the researcher will be expected to clearly and briefly highlight the knowledge gap addressed by the study.  Basically, a research problem can be highlighted in one or two paragraphs.  However, it can also be elaborated in a full page or more.  The problem should be properly focused; it should not be defined too narrowly or too widely.

1.3       Statement of Hypotheses and/or Research Questions

1.4       Objectives of the Research

The objectives of the study should also be clearly stated. Besides proper focusing (i.e., avoid having too many objectives), the objectives should be realistically, conceived.  Experience shows for instance, marginal chances of research results significantly influencing policy. Where the studies pursue more than one objective, the researchers) are advised to categorise the pertinent objectives in order of importance into primary (or main/ overall) and secondary (or specific) ones.

1.5       Significance of the Study

The utility of the results of the study will manifest the significance of the study.

It should articulate the explicit uses of the research results, e.g., in forecasting of future trends, in policy evaluation and/or formulation, comparison to further studies (as a measure to contribution to knowledge).

2.0       REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE

  1. Literature review should embrace both conceptual and empirical literature.  It should therefore cover the most important articles, books and other relevant publications, presenting the theory of the subject, and those presenting previous empirical work on the topic (comparing then theory and model hypothesis, data, and results). [A conceptual framework is presented in this section where the researcher builds up the main theory(s) that marks the contribution of the study]
  2. Through literature review, the researchers should clearly demonstrate their mastery of the research theme from the conceptual and the historical perspectives.  They should be able to outline the relevant theoretical background to their field of research.
  3. Researchers should bear in mind that the omission of key academic and professional literature, failure to cite contemporary literature, and neglecting any other important sources of knowledge (e.g., government publications) on the subject might work to their disadvantage.
  •       Conceptual Framework and Development of the Hypotheses
  • Studies that involve the testing of hypotheses should clearly identify such hypotheses.
  • Hypotheses are in essence, statements of predictive or postulated links between or among the researched subjects
  • They are intended to sharpen the focus of the researchers(s) on the key variables to be studied, and the posited relationship thereof.
  • [NB: Research hypotheses are often stated in summary form in the introductory chapter in some studies, however, these hypotheses have to be derived from the conceptual framework and will therefore appear in the literature section with greater exposition

3.0       METHODOLOGY

  1. Researchers will be required to indicate the research methods and techniques they intend to use.
  2. Research methods, in this context embrace both data collection methods (for both secondary and primary data) and the analytical tools of research (e.g., statistical techniques used to establish the relations between the investigated variables, and the methods for the evaluation of the accuracy of the test results).
  3. Explicitly, it is in this section where questions like the following should be cleared; the extent to which primary and/or secondary data will be needed/used; choice between participatory and observatory study; sampling procedures and sample size, etc.
  4. Junior researchers may gain from the experience of senior researchers and are encouraged to pursue this possibility.

REFERENCES

  1. All relevant articles and texts that have been sourced for information must be listed
  2. The listing is normally in alphabetical order, and the surname of each author precedes the first and middle names or initials
  3. Note that every author(s) cited in any of the paper sections must appear in the references and must appear only once
  4. Different citation and referencing styles are specified by the institutions sponsoring the study, or by the publishers of journals and this includes nowadays, how to cite and list Internet articles

APPENDICES

  1. Questionnaires and other devices to be used in the study should appear in the appendices
  2. Charts, diagrams, maps, etc. that the researcher might wish to include are generally put in the appendices

Time frame for the research

  1. A time frame of the research should be included in the proposal.
  2. It should indicate a logical breakdown of activities and a realistic estimation of the time that will be required to conduct them.
  3. By the large, the time frame of the research should be within the overall frame provided in the call for research proposals.

Budget

  1. Every submitted research proposal should contain a research budget
  2. In preparing the research proposal and its budget, the lowest and upper limits of the research grant must be observed.
  3. Besides, the budget should be confined to admissible items, which will be available in the secretariat of the Associate dean for Research and Publications.
  4. In general, budgets should indicate the following:
    1. Research honorarium in Tanzanian shillings per month
    1. Labour costs also in Tanzanian shillings

(Research Assistants, Data Analysis, Data coding the inputting, and other personnel costs)

  • Subsistence allowance
    • Transport costs

(Researcher, Research Assistants)

  • Materials and Supplies
